Please read the following information regarding the new laws on the usage of cell phones while driving.

It is now against the law to use hand-held cellphones and other electronic devices while driving on BC roads. Here is some very useful information on the new law for you, your family and your friends.

Under the law you may not:

·       Operate, view or hold hand-held cellphones or other electronic devices

·       Send or read emails and/or text (e.g., BlackBerry, PDA, cell phone)

·       Operate or hold hand-held music or portable gaming devices (such as MP3 players, iPods)

·       Program or adjust GPS systems, whether built into the vehicle or not, while driving. Settings must be programmed before driving

·       View a television screen

Any violation of the law will net drivers a $167 fine. If a driver is caught dialing, texting or emailing, three points will also be added to their record. 

What's allowed?

·       You can use hands-free cell phones that are voice activated, or activated by one touch, provided they are securely attached to the vehicle or the driver's body (such as an earpiece)

·       You can dial 9-1-1 from a hand held cell phone in the event of an emergency

The regulations go one step further for new drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP), who are prohibited from using all hand held and hands-free devices while driving. GLP drivers will be fined $167 and receive three points for any offence under the new legislation.
